Addiction can be defined as a persistent, irresistible desire for a particular, familiar feeling or experience. The addicted person continuously tries to replace what they feel as an unbearable dullness in their life with states of exhilaration. They are possessed by the objective of attaining that pleasurable state of mind, which enables temporary (but repeatable) escape from a physical or psychological pain they are carrying. The course of the addictive habit develops progressively through a number of levels, from simple consumption, through substance abuse, ending with total dependence. It is worth noting that, in loving relationships, addiction is one of the biggest killers of intimacy.
Many of you will think that you do not have addictions of this nature or magnitude. But check through your daily regular pleasurable consumptions. Would any of them be too difficult for you to let go of at the present moment? If so these simple consumptions are possibly shaping up to become “Addictive Habits” and they can transform into harmful actions which can take you to places of tremendous obstruction and limitation in the achievement of your purpose, productivity and expansion.
For me, addictive habits stem from innate qualities that we have either abandoned or overused, thereby transforming them into neurotic features of our personalities. Once we understand this, we can, through a programme of steady personal inner work, rediscover the strength of those underlying qualities and, by realigning ourselves with them, multiply our productive energy, elevate our vibration, obtaining sustainable success as reward, adding value and meaning to our lives and to the lives of others.
In this presentation, we will explore and clarify the Enneagram’s 9 basic personalities, complete with their lights and shadows, learning about the maps and pathways to take towards healing and transformation.
